Some thoughts on God, Creation, and what we believe.  Thanks to CS Lewis “Mere Christianity” for the concepts and statements presented here.

 The Law of Human Nature:

Human beings all over the Earth have an idea that they ought to behave in a certain way, and can't really get rid of it.

Yet we do not behave that way. In other words, we all know the Law of Nature or the code of right and wrong, and yet we always seem to be breaking it.

(Rom 2:15 NIV) since they show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts now accusing, now even defending them.)

 Two Views of the Universe:

I. The Materialistic View: The universe simply happened and all that is in it is a product of a huge chain reaction that someday will totally explained by science.

II. The Religious View: The universe was created by an intelligence.

Science by itself cannot determine which of the two views are right in the traditional sense of experiments. Even if science became so complete it knew everything there was to know about the universe it would still not answer the following questions: Why does the universe go on as it does? Why is there a universe? Why am I here?

The One Thing We Do Know ~About.. Man:

Because we are men (and women) we have inside information on this one important part of the universe.., ourselves. We know that men are under a moral law which they did not make and cannot seem to forget even when they try.

If the universe simply happened then logic would dictate that we wouldn't have a moral code of right and wrong in our hearts, there would be nothing to try and get us to behave in a certain way so why bother to behave that way? Why sacrifice your life for another? Why spend money and time helping others?   Why not take all that life has, whether it is offered or not? Why not be real bad? Hey! there would be no bad if there was no right or wrong. Hitler could be a good guy! It would all depend on how you would look at it.  But we all know there is a bad and a good. It's in us from the start. Somebody put it there.  There are good reasons to believe in God.

One is the Universe we see around us.  Scientists are beginning to recognize the balance and intelligence behind everything from DNA to the galaxies.

Two is the Moral Law He has put into our hearts and minds. From this second piece we can conclude that He is extremely interested in our right behavior, in fair play, honesty, unselfishness, respect, and courage. The Moral Law is not soft, it never quits telling us how we ought to behave, and it does not seem to care what pain and suffering we might go through in order to behave this way. It expects sacrifice from us.

Now this creator of the universe and the Moral Law, can be either the ultimate evil or the ultimate goodness. Since He wants us to act righteously, we call deduce that He is the ultimate goodness and since we are His creation. He wants us' to act just like Him.

(Gen 1:27 NIV) So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.

This absolute goodness must hate most of what we do and we are making ourselves His enemies every day because we don't act the way He wants us to. Because He must be the absolute justice, we must be all in rebellion with that justice through our acts. This is the fix we are in. We cannot win!!!

The Curious Christian Story:

Christians have an answer to this dilemma. They believe that God made the universe and put this law in our hearts. They also believe that God made us with free will and we can decide for ourselves whether or not to go right or wrong. Free will makes evil possible but it also makes love or goodness a wonderful part of life. A world of robots wouldn't be worth creating. This happiness God designs for us is being freely, voluntarily united to Him and each other, is like the ultimate marriage, the ultimate family.

A car runs on gas, we run on God. When you take Him away we run down the hill on our own, out of control, and we crash. Great civilizations are built up throughout history: but some fatal flaw always brings some selfish and cruel people to the top and it all comes crashing down again. Since recorded time a group of special people have inhabited this world.  They believed in a supreme creator.  That there is only one God, and He wants righteous conduct,  these people were the Jews and the Old Testament is the account of their relationship with God. In history among these Jews a man suddenly turns up who talks and acts like He is God. He claims to forgive sins, says He has always existed, and is coming to judge the world at the end of time. This man was Jesus.

Now think about this, a sin is an imperfection, a falling short of the goal, a breach of the moral law! Anyone who says He has the ability to forgive a man from stealing from another man without consulting the victim has a lot of nerve, or really is conceited or maybe an idiot?  Jesus always behaved as if He was the one offended by the sin or the breaking of the moral law. Even His enemies, when they read of Him in the Bible, do not usually get the impression that He is conceited or an idiot. They always acclaim Him to be a great moral teacher, a great philosopher.

A man who said the sort of things Jesus said, such as forgiving others sins against God, or that He was the Son of God, [(Luke 22:70 NIV) They all asked, "Are you then the Son of God?" He replied, "You are right in saying I am."].

or that He was God, (John 18:36 NIV) Jesus said, "My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jews. But now my kingdom is from another place." (John 18:37 NIV) "You are a king, then!" said Pilate. Jesus answered, "You are right in saying I am a king. In fact, for this reason I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me."

and who finally went to His torture and death on the cross could not possibly be only a teacher. All He had to do was confess that He was just a human teacher and they would have let Him go. By saying He was King, He was claiming to be the Messiah, the Son of God, and God as it was known to the Jews at that time and is to Christians today.  Jesus would have to be a lunatic, or even the devil of hell himself, to die for this, unless He really was who He said He was. So don't call Him a teacher or prophet, He never left that open to us, He didn't intend to.

What is Left to Do

If you realize that we cannot behave the way our creator intends us to, and that He has provided a way for us:

(John 3:16 NIV) "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

(John 3:17 NIV) For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

(John 3:18 NIV) Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.  You must ask for His forgiveness (which is assured), ask Him to become part of your life, and ask Him to help you change the way you are living. He promises that if you "believe" which is translated "to trust/follow" Him, you are spared the punishment that awaits those who place themselves first. Salvation is a gift, all you have to do is accept it. You cannot earn it, you cannot be perfect, but you can be saved.

Don't wait another moment.
